Highway 12 Safety Project Moves Forward in Starkville
Highway 12 remains one of Starkville’s most significant transportation safety concerns, and a major improvement project is now moving through the design phase.
According to the City of Starkville, the Highway 12 corridor accounts for a substantial share of serious crashes in the city. In its federal safety grant application, the city identified Highway 12 as Starkville’s most dangerous roadway and reported that the corridor accounts for 30% of vehicular fatalities and serious injuries in the city.
To address those concerns, Starkville received approximately $8.1 million in federal Safe Streets and Roads for All funding for improvements centered around Highway 12 and Garrard Road.
The project will include a full-size multilane roundabout and a 10-foot pedestrian and multi-use connector extending from the Garrard Road and Old West Point Road area toward Walmart Neighborhood Market. The project is currently in the design phase.
The city says the improvements are intended to slow traffic as Highway 12 transitions into the city while also creating safer connections for pedestrians, cyclists, and other travelers.
Why It Matters
Highway 12 is one of Starkville’s busiest corridors and connects neighborhoods, businesses, Mississippi State University, and other major destinations. The planned improvements represent a significant in
vestment in both roadway safety and pedestrian connectivity.
Starkville Voices will continue following the project as it moves from design toward construction.
